The teacher types a 9-letter word into the space and presses the "Fill Squares" button. The letters are randomly distributed in the squares, with the middle letter always being a vowel. Start the timer and students/teams have 2 minutes to write down words using only the letters in the squares. Each word must include the vowel in the middle square.* The student/team with the most words gets 1 point and those who guess the 9-letter word get an additional 2 points.
*This middle vowel rule is the original rule that I found, but teachers may want to ignore this rule with lower level students or harder words.
